How can I use BRFplus in SAP MDG Central Governance to validate a master-data attribute or derive a field automatically?

In MDG Central Governance, use BRFplus validation and derivation functions named for the entity, such as CHECK_CARR and DERIVE_CARR, configured in USMD_RULE or through MDGIMG. Add the entity context, build a ruleset, define the condition or assignment, activate the objects, and test in the MDG application.

Use BRFplus in SAP MDG Central Governance to validate or derive attribute values without coding. First identify the MDG data model, entity type, and technical attribute name, then maintain the rules in MDGIMG or USMD_RULE. In the guide example, entity CARR (Airline) uses CHECK_CARR for validation of CURRCODE and DERIVE_CARR for deriving the Airline URL from the Airline name.

Process flow

  1. Start MDGIMG and navigate to Master Data Governance > Classic Mode in SAP MDG > Central Governance > General Settings > Data Modeling > Edit Data Model.
  2. Select data model SF and choose Visualize Data Model to identify the entity and technical attribute.
  3. Open Master Data Governance > Classic Mode in SAP MDG > Central Governance > General Settings > Data Quality and Search > Validations and Enrichments > Define Validation and Derivation Rules, or start USMD_RULE and enter SF.
  4. Create CHECK_<ENTITY_TYPE> for validation or DERIVE_<ENTITY_TYPE> for derivation, using the entity suffix from the data model.
  5. Add the relevant entity data object to the function context.
  6. Create and assign a ruleset.
  7. Define the condition and the message or assignment logic.
  8. Activate the BRFplus objects and ruleset, then test in the MDG app such as Manage Airlines - Governance.
